BD One Last Chance Logline #23

TITLE: Five Man Fugue
GENRE: Author-as-character Meta Fiction/Urban Thriller

On a winter night in Chicago, four men cross paths: a septuagenarian mourning his deceased wife, a homeless man defending his secret love, a penniless dilettante anticipating his inheritance and an ex-convict struggling to reform.  Each overlapping story sheds further light on the others, and on our mysterious author, Robin Love, who intends to craft a love story for himself even if it means sacrificing his characters along the way.

  1. Cut the part about it being Meta fiction and don't say "our" mysterious author. You're writing in third person, not 2nd. Just say 'a' mysterious author. Other than that, sounds interesting.

    Good luck!

  2. I like the set-up and the range of characters, the setting being one winter night in Chicago. I agree re the metafiction comment above. If it's like Pirandello's, Six Characters in Search of an Author, I would start with information about the author. Author Robin Love tries to craft a love story for himself, but his characters get in the way? That's lame, I know, but I'd rather see introduction of the main character first. Because the initial story sounds so compelling, hearing about the author detracts from my attention, or at least throws me.

I like the idea of starting with the author and agree on the suggestions above. I applaud the way you have quickly summed up the four different characters. Hard to do and you've done it well.
